Abstract

Nowadays, many globally recognizedorganizations and institutes have introduced a number of indicesrelated to telecommunications sector. Each index has gainedsignificant attention from the public and private sectors aroundthe world because the results of such national ranking underthese indices have a direct impact on reliability, nationalcompetitiveness and investment attractiveness. They are thenthoroughly analyzed by policy makers and private organizationsalike to identify the areas for improvement aiming to achievebetter ranking in the upcoming rounds. However the highnumber of such indices may create confusion among investorsand analysts and raise concerns among policy makers, especiallyregarding the way each index is calculated or ranked. Thoseindices, relevant to telecommunications industry at present, areformulated to measure the level of development in thetelecommunications and ICT and consequently create visibleimpacts on the country’s economic growth. Therefore thepreparation of these indices should aim to focus at the factors tostimulate growth, to drive the industry further, and to identifysustainability. This paper compares the different ICT andtelecommunications indices developed by various organizationsacross the globe to highlight the factors impacting economicgrowth. Recommendations for supportive policies and strategiesare provided in this paper on how to improve ICT indicesranking to foster socio-economic benefits for countries.
